The submarine of Project 636 is a striking example of implementation and development of one of the most successful series of submarines in non-nuclear shipbuilding at the end of the 20-th century – Project 877 EKM, known in the world as KILO Class according to NATO Classification.

The major features of KILO class submarines are:

  • low noise;
  • perfect architecture of the hull;
  • a reasonable degree of all the submarine control procedures;
  • powerful missile-torpedo and mine armament;
  • good conditions of habitability of the crew;
  • easy maintenance of the submarine.

Since 1986 submarines of KILO Class have been exported. Since the middle of nineties construction was began of 636 project submarines with a more powerful propulsion plant, less noisy.

In 1998 joint work was started for modernization of submarines of 877 EKM Project with participation of FSUE CDB ME “RUBIN”, FSUE RPA “AVRORA”, FSUE CRI “ELECTROPRIBOR”, DB “NOVATOR” and RPA “AGAT”.

The most significant achievement of the modernization was a successful implementation of the task of creation and testing in ship’s conditions of a new missile complex “CLUB-S” which allows to launch cruise missiles from torpedo tubes.

Availability on board of the modern set of cruise missiles allows to increase the probability of a submarine to start attack and destroy high-speed targets, to increase combat stability during retaliatory actions of the enemy, to increase degree of safety when the submarine is acting close to the shore.

The following equipment was installed on the submarine simultaneously with this complex:

  • the latest inertial navigation system with a long-term storage of parameters without correction which allows to deliver the necessary information to the missile complex underwater. This provides for a better secrecy when the submarine is performing combat missions;
  • a state-of-the-art automated information and control system, including a control subsystem for missile weapons and providing for solutions of commanding tasks, delivery of target designation data and control of missiles weapons as well as torpedo tubes.

In addition to the above a new storage battery was installed with the service life of no less than 5 years. After successful completion of trials in 2000 the submarine was handed over to the Customer. Since construction began and to 2009 JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” built and delivered to the Customer 18 submarines of projects 877 EKM and 636.

3 submarines were modernized in the course of the medium repair during the same period.

Adding of the anti-ship cruise missile complex to submarines’ arsenal extended considerably combat capabilities of KILO class submarines and raised their competitiveness on the world market of the century.

Experience gained by the shipyard’s specialists and involved enterprises has been successfully used during construction of new submarines of this class and submarines of the 4th generation.
